My Mom’s Shrimp Masala Recipe

Jul 13, 2020

Hi friends!

I hope you are all doing well and having a wonderful start to your week. I know I shared on Instagram that my mom was helping me recipe test a new shrimp marinade and I think I found something we finally love.

I originally started making this recipe after buying my friend Beth’s cookbook and using her genius hack for the cauliflower grits. She adds crumbled goat cheese to the Trader Joe’s frozen cauliflower mashed potatoes and they are perfection!

The recipe is quick, easy and healthy so I always find myself coming back to it but wishing my shrimp had a little more kick to it. I make sure to buy the frozen Red Argentinian raw shrimp from Trader Joe’s because it’s my favorite but any raw shrimp will do. Also be sure that your pan is sizzling hot before you throw the shrimp on!

This masala can be used on so many things! Fish and veggies (especially love it on eggplant) are both great and you can store it in the fridge or freezer to use anytime you need!

Shrimp Masala Marinade

1 tsp Chili Powder

1 tsp Cumin

1 tsp Turmeric

1 tsp Salt

2 tbsp White Vinegar

 Mix all together

keep paste in the refrigerator/freezer and use it when you want!

If marinating shrimp right away, keep them in the fridge for 2-4 hours after coating. I then just toss it over the cauliflower mash and top with hot sauce or Sriracha ranch!

Let me know if you try it out and I hope you enjoy!

How long does the masala last in the fridge? Can I make it in bulk to have on hand for quick dinners?

And, is it supposed to be a pasta or rather liquid?

I tired this tonight but it was very liquidy. Definitely not a paste. How many shrimps do you use for a tsp of the mixture?

Make sure that you are drying the shrimp really well before applying the mixture! I usually thaw and then pat mine with a paper towel. I use the 1lb bag of frozen shrimp and 2-3 tsp of the mixture. Hope that helps!

I assume you marinate the shrimp while raw and then cook? Or prepare shrimp and then add masala? And my masala was runny as well , does it thicken in the fridge if not using right away ?

    • shaheen khan says:

Always marinate raw meat, should look similar to the picture with the raw shrimp covered in masala when it is going in the fridge. If your masala is runny I would add the vinegar little by little next time until you get the right consistency. Should look paste like!
