Eyelash Extensions: All Your Questions Answered!

The night of my first appointment was also our first date night in weeks and I was so excited!

Okay guys, I am answering all your burning questions today! I shared my initial appointment at Deka Lash in Westport Village over on Instagram and I got a ton of questions surrounding the appointment, cost, time, etc. I thought it would be easiest to answer everything here and share a few before and after’s as well as how I’m liking them a week in.

First, let me say that I debated this for a long time! I originally bought this lash serum during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale after so many of you said you loved it but was hesitant only because the #1 comment I received was how diligent you needed to be. I can barely remember to put my watch on most mornings so I was afraid I just wouldn’t be consistent enough to see results.

Shortly after that I received an email about Deka Lash opening in Louisville and figured it was meant to be. I have had friends get extensions before and was originally drawn to them because they looked so great on them. I am not someone who wears much makeup and these made my friends look like they had a full eye on! I figured if I could get away with these and just a little powder it was well worth it.

I was a little nervous before my first appointment but once I went to the salon that all drifted away. I LOVED my technician Alisia at Deka Lash and she walked me through everything in detail. I didn’t want to look drastically different and she really understood what I was going for which made me feel a lot more comfortable. If you are inclined to make an appointment here in Louisville I can not recommend her enough!

So, here we go:

How much do they cost?

Prices vary everywhere but an initial set at Deka Lash in Louisville for a NEW customer is currently $79.99 and for a returning customer the initial set is $180. Refills are $70 and lash removal is $30. They also offer brow tinting for $24 and if you think you will use the service regularly I highly recommend checking out their Membership options!

This is the first studio in Louisville but I like that it is part of an overall corporation. All the studio’s are designed similarly and it makes me feel more comfortable that there is an overall process for training, service, etc.

Can you have them while pregnant?

Yes! There are no side effects or precautions to take while pregnant. I know when I was pregnant my body did react differently to things so I would just talk to your technician specifically about the adhesive and lash type before starting!

How long do they last?

They should last as long as your natural lashes. When your lashes naturally shed, the synthetic lash goes too. Most people need refills every 2 to 4 weeks depending on factors including your lifestyle, skin type, etc. Alisia scheduled my first refill 2 weeks from my initial appointment so we could see what my lash shedding is like and adjust based on that.

How do you make them last longer?

Avoid rubbing your eyes or cleaning them vigorously and don’t use any oil containing cleansers or waterproof mascara. Mascara isn’t recommended because it will actually clump your lashes together and honestly I can’t imagine why you would need it!

Deka Lash also has a ton of great products that can help! They have an awesome Lash Serum my technician Alisia was raving about, makeup remover pads that are safe for eyelashes, makeup swabs that I have been loving and a great face wash that is safe for your lashes too.

Can I swim and/or get them wet?

Yes! Occasionally, swimming can shorten the life of the extensions for some people but everyone is different. The adhesive is waterproof but the hair shafts absorb water which may loosen the adhesive bond. As with all skin, hair, makeup or body products, everyone can react differently to the same product. I still shower, wash my face, etc just try to avoid rubbing my eyes and  getting anything with oil on them.

How long does it take?

A full application will take between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your lashes! My first appointment took around 2 hours but I also love Alisia and we talked a lot 😉 Eyelash Extension Refills take 45 minutes to an hour.

Will my eyelashes fall out?

Not if the eyelash extensions are applied correctly, but remember your natural lashes do shed every 30-120 days. The Lash Artists are trained in properly applying and removing eyelash extensions and I’ve had several friends keep them forever and never had any issues with their real lashes.

Can you still use a lash serum?

Yes! You can still use a lash serum as long as it isn’t oil based and my technician actually recommended it to keep my lashes strong.

How do you care for them?

I was told not to get them wet for the first 24 hours but she said I was fine to work out the next morning. I did and trust me I sweat all over them but they were fine! I avoid any oil based cleansers directly on my eyes and don’t rub them at all. I really thought it was going to be hard but I have honestly forgotten they are there.

Are you happy you got them?

YES! I may never go back. They make the biggest difference and I now feel put together with no makeup on. It’s so much less of a hassle to get dressed and I just feel better overall. LOVE them!

Here is an up close before and after:

I opted for the ‘Natural Curve’ set since I don’t usually have long lashes I didn’t want it to be over the top. Alisia did an amazing job picking an appropriate length and I seriously love them.
