Now that all the hustle and bustle of Christmas has come and gone, it’s great to keep that giving spirit going. After visiting Cradles to Crayons back in October, I was so energized and moved by what The Giving Factory was doing I wanted to get more involved and help spread the word.
I often hear from friends (and had felt the same way before) that’s it’s harder to find a place to donate your time and energy than you think. Since I had such a wonderful experience at Cradles to Crayons and found it so seamless to register and set up times, I thought it would be the perfect way to get friends together and volunteer some of our time. It was so nice that blog readers, friends and acquaintances were all happy to sign up and people were so generous about donating diapers and other goods.
We ended up having a snafu on the Sunday we were supposed to head in, but I am trying to organize something new for January (if you are interested in coming just shoot me an email!) and it was wonderful to still be able to take over all the donations. Currently they need diapers in sizes newborn and 1, and since everyone got those I tried to pick up a few boxes of larger sizes as well.
I think it’s a great time to remember that according to the new study Diaper Need and Its Impact on U.S. Families, by the National Diaper Bank Network and founding sponsor, Huggies, 1 in 3 families struggle to provide enough clean diapers for their children and almost 50% of families here in Chicago face that same battle. Struggling to find a clean diaper for your child is something no one should ever have to experience and I think it’s a problem we can all readily help with.
I’m so proud to work with Huggies since they realize just how important this issue is and are trying to raise awareness of diaper need in the U.S. while helping build up diaper banks across the country in partnership with the National Diaper Bank Network. In order to ensure all babies receive the clean, dry diapers they need, Huggies has already donated more than 200 million diapers and wipes over the past six years to help families in need.
This problem is such a simple task we can all tackle! Even if you aren’t able to make donations, your time is so valuable. The volunteer shifts are just two hours and you will end up helping so many families in need. I really urge you to reach out in your local community and find ways to help because this world can always use a little more good!
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your loved ones and if you have any questions, comments or concerns about volunteering, donations or how to get involved feel free to reach out at any time!
