If you follow me on Instagram, you saw that when we got back from Louisville I headed straight Grand Cochon, the exciting conclusion to the Cochon 555 tour. I was so thrilled we were back in time for the event and couldn’t wait to try all the delicious cocktails and creative dishes. Trevor and I had planned to make this a fun date night because what would Trevor love more than a food extravaganza with amazing drinks?! Nothing. Unfortunately our childcare plans fell through and he ended up staying home to put Zain down and take one for the team.

Zain’s bedtime routine is actually Trevor’s thing and it’s insanely sweet. Since he doesn’t see him much during the day, he really enjoys giving him a bath at night, feeding him reading him a book. Although I was bummed he couldn’t make it, I was super excited to head to Grand Cochon with The House of Angostura

If you haven’t heard of it before, Cochon 555 is a culinary competition where 14 chefs from around the country compete to see who can cook the best dishes using heritage breed pigs—all promoting sustainable and better food. Watching the art of butchering and slow cooking the meat was such a cool experience and far more complicated than I had ever imagined. The competition promotes heritage pig family-farming and donates all proceeds of the event to their sister charity, Piggy Bank.

The House of Angostura had some amazing cocktails and even some small bites from Baptiste & Bottle infused with Angostura aromatic bitters. I had never thought to use bitters in my dishes, but walked away with some pretty great recipe inspiration. As far as the cocktails, the GC Swizzle with the bacon garnish had to be my personal favorite! James Wampler of Proof and Provision in Atlanta actually took home the prize for best cocktail in their PUNCH KINGS competition, but you can check out the recipes from all the competing bartenders in each represented city here and try them out at home!

Moral of the story, mark your calendar for next year and always have a back up baby sitter for date night 😉
